Hi! We are two people who would like to hike Ol Doinyo Lengai in January. Our starting point will be Arusha. Now, we are thinking if we should either rent a car in Arusha and drive there ourselves, or if we should take public transport there. My questions are: -Is there public transport from Arusha to the Ol Doinyo Lengai area, and is it good? -If we stay in one of the villages around Lake Natron/Ol Doinyo Lengai, we of course have to get to the starting point of the hike. If we don't rent a car in Arusha, I read that you have to pay 250$ (per car) to be transported from the village to the starting point of the hike. Is this true? Has anyone made experiences with this? We are aware that we have to pay around 100$ for the hike, and additionally pay the guide. This is of course no problem! Essentially, we'd like to figure out if it's more affordable/smarter to rent a car in Arusha or to just be transported by a company. Thank you for any replies!

Hi Franziska Listening to Judith your question is about if you can see that it is active. When we where up there you can not see Magma (it is black) but you do see gas coming out of the mountain. Apparently the magma is black of color and some of the coldest magma in the world. When it is pitch black you can see the glowing (apparently). I also made use of Masaai Giraffe Ecolodge and had a good experience. (recommended). Please do the mountain it is 100% worth it just make sure you are fit enough and mentally prepared. The views you get going up and down is one of a kind. Enjoy! Wessel

The best time to climb is undoubtedly the dry season although you can climb it all year round. Tanzania has 2 dry seasons and 2 wet seasons: one dry season is from June to October and one in February (although, sometimes the one in February doesn't actually happen). You're most likely to get no clouds at the top at the height of the dry season from July to September. Unfortunately this often means there's a lot of dust in the air so the view can be hazy. It will also make you climb back down in the sun a lot hotter.

Yes one day is enough. It is one of the hardest climbs, but you start at midnight and you summit around 6am. You climb at night because it gets too hot during the day and also because watching the sunrise in the direction of Kilimanjaro is incredible. I recommend you stay and climb with Engarosero Lake Natron camp. They are the best camp in the area, with a natural spring flowing through it helping you recover from the hikes in the area. They also make sure that you climb with a good guide rather than just taking a lucky dip
