Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies has been picked as India's official entry for Oscars 2025. The Film Federation of India shortlisted the rural India set, light-hearted satire unanimously from 28 other movies that were sent for consideration.

A couple of days ago, it was announced that the Kiran Rao directorial ‘Laapataa Ladies’ would be India’s official entry for the Oscars. The film uses humour to tell a very compelling story about women in rural India and highlights many of our country’s societal norms woven with patriarchal themes.

The younger Anu’s beliefs are dramatically different from Prabha. She’s sprightly and liberal in her relationships whereas the guarded Prabha is wary of stepping outside the line of gendered expectations. Kapadia juxtaposes these two characters, representative of two disparate generations, buttressing each learning from the other.
