The SF Bay Area is poised to see temperatures soar to dangerous levels Tuesday in a rare October heat wave, including an excessive heat warning for downtown SF.

San Francisco started off October on a hot note, with parts of the city registering temperatures as high as 95 degrees on an unusually warm start to the first full month of autumn.

Downtown San Francisco reached temperatures in the 90s on Tuesday afternoon, a mark the area has not seen in nearly two years.

Hot is the only way to describe the weather in the Bay Area Tuesday.The National Weather Service said most of the region will see temperatures in the 90s while inland locations could see the thermometer reach 110.

An excessive heat warning is in effect through Wednesday night in much of the greater Bay Area because of temperatures that could reach 110 degrees in some inland locations and up to 96 degrees in downtown San Francisco, according to the National Weather Service.

Record-breaking hot weather was expected to bake the San Francisco Bay Area Tuesday, the hottest day of the current heat wave, including coastal areas where people usually seek relief from the heat.
